Emergent Matter Module Presentation
A warm invitation to the module presentations of "Emergent Matter", a design research-focused module that explores materials and their production processes.
“In many ways, we’re living out the material dreams and needs of our ancestors, (…)” (1). Since the 1960s, a material diversity based on petrochemicals, high-energy materials and enormous amounts of sand has fuelled industrialisation worldwide. In 2020, we reached a tipping point: for the first time, anthropogenic mass surpassed the total amount of biomass on our planet (2). The need to shift our material cultures and the self-image of bio-based materials becomes evident.
How can we use design practice to reinterpret and contextualise nature’s high-performance materials? How can we develop new production processes and innovative production logics? MA Industrial Design students have created material samples, processes, and prototypes to develop new techniques that allow for new forms.
