Speculative Practices
Design is often expected to solve problems, but what if design instead begins by reframing them? This module explores design as a way to interrogate the broader ecological, social, and political landscapes in which challenges are embedded.
Speculative Practices have long occupied this space under various names: Radical Design, Critical Design, Discursive Design, Design Fiction, and more. Through this module, students will be introduced to key methods of scenario development, the historical and contemporary trajectories of speculative design, and the theoretical frameworks that support it.
Students will examine the kinds of questions speculative approaches prompt us to ask, the shifts in perspective they enable, and the impact they can have across disciplines and domains. At a time when dominant narratives are proving insufficient, cultivating a mindset that questions the status quo is essential. Speculative practices offer not answers, but new possibilities—and with them, the capacity to imagine and shape alternative futures.
